Africa’s Cycling Star Biniam Girmay Denied for World Championships

Last year, Biniam Girmay, a 23-year-old cyclist from Eritrea currently ranked 50th in the world, showcased his talent by securing victories in both a stage of the Giro d’Italia and the Gent-Wevelgem. Girmay, who is widely considered as one of the most promising talents in world cycling, was set to participate in the world championships road race in Glasgow on Sunday. However, his plans were thwarted when he was unable to obtain a visa to the UK, leading to his unfortunate withdrawal from the event.

In a saddening turn of events, it appears that Girmay is not the only Eritrean cyclist facing visa issues. Three other cyclists from Eritrea – Natnael Tesfatsion, Merhawi Kudus, and Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier – have also encountered similar visa denials, preventing them from joining the world championships.
