John Uelses, first man to clear 16 feet in the pole vault has died at the age of 85. Uelses broke the world record at the Millrose Games of 1962 by jumping 16 feet ¼ inches (4.88 metres). He also became one of the first athletes to use a fiberglass pole, which has now become a standard in track & field. The current world record by Sweden’s Armand Duplantis 20 feet 4+3⁄4 inches.
